Making Stone Tools Workshop

For the last several weeks, an archeological dig has been taking place at Jackson Gore. The site is about 11,000 years old and contains artifacts from the Paleo-Indian period. Skilled craftsman, these people were known for their remarkable artistry in making stone tools. The Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) recruited six volunteers to assist with the dig, and six of them took turns sifting the soil to find “flint chards.” Many interesting items were turned up during the dig, including a nearly intake projectile point.

On September 2, Sunday, CHS is pleased to host Charles Paquin as part of Vermont Archaeology Month. Paquin, who worked on the Jackson Gore dig, will demonstrate how stone tools were made during the Paleo-Indian period. As Cavendish is home to standing stones and other ancient artifacts, people can bring items they may found for Paquin to identify. If you are planning on bringing something, please try to identify where the item was found, by whom and an approximate date. The event, sponsored by the Vermont Archaeology Association, in conjunction with CHS, will take place from 2-4 at the Cavendish Museum on Rt 131 in Cavendish. The program is suitable for all ages. Okemo Valley 11,000 years ago - Sept 2, 9 at CHS

When talking about the growing interest in genealogy, one person noted, “I’m not so interested in who my ancestors were 100 years ago. I want to know what they were doing 10,000 years ago.” The Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) is hosting two programs in September to help answer that question.

In July, six volunteers from CHS worked along side the archeologists at the Jackson Gore dig. Not only did they have a chance to see first hand the types of tools used for hunting 11,000 years ago, but they also helped to find them. The site contains artifacts from the Paleoindian period. In areas of the Northeast that were formerly overlain by glaciers the first Native peoples to move in after the ice retreated are referred to as Paleoindians by archaeologists. Skilled craftsman, these people were known for their remarkable artistry in making stone tools. Many interesting items were turned up during the dig, including a nearly intake projectile point.

On September 2, Sunday, CHS is pleased to host Charles Paquin as part of Vermont Archaeology Month. Paquin, who worked on the Jackson Gore dig, will demonstrate how stone tools were made during the Paleo-Indian period. He will demonstrate and discuss materials used for flint-knapping, flint fractures and how to work it, and make a projectile point. As Cavendish is home to standing stones and other ancient artifacts, people can bring items they may have for Paquin to identify.

So what were the hunters doing with these tools? Jess Robinson, from the University of Vermont Consulting Archaeology Program, , will present an overview of Paleoindian research in the Northeast. He will discuss what is currently known about Paleoindian life ways, and how recent excavations at the Jackson-Gore site in Ludlow add to the sparse but expanding body of knowledge regarding these people. Robinson, president of the Vermont Archeological Society, and the person in charge of the Jackson Gore dig, will speak at the Cavendish Historical Society Museum on September 9 (Sunday) from 2-4 pm.
