ALICE SUOJANEN SPEAKS ON FINNS IN VT Sept 1
Alice Suojanen, now of Chester, will speak on Saturday, September 1,2007 at 7:00 pm at the Black River Academy Museum, 14 High Street, Ludlow, Vermont.
Alice was the tenth of eleven children born to Finnish immigrants. She lived on the Suojanen farm in Andover and attended San Francisco State University. She was worked in many positions, including Personnel and even owned her own cooperative. She has also traveled to many locations, but has now returned home. Shortly after arriving home again, Alice restarted the local Finnish Group.
Alice will give an overview of how Finns came to the United States and to Vermont. She will discuss school, both elementary and higher schooling, learning trades, etc. She will also discuss the cultural life of Finns, the dances, weddings, sauna, music and other special activities. She will talk about the Finnish newspapers and Finnish Businessmen.
Alice has a wealth of information and will gladly answer any questions on the Finns that you might present. Refreshments will be served. Admission by donation. For more information, please contact the Black River Academy Museum at 228-5050.

Streetscape Offers New Limited Edition Cria
Ludlow Streetscapes is excited to
announce that the New Limited Edition Cria has been born! She is truly a
magnificent work of art and has been
The four limited edition tabletop sized farm animals: a cow, pig, rooster and sheep are also now on display for viewing around the Village of Ludlow. “Holy Cow” created by Will Nye, will be on display at the Hunter Lea Gallery and Frameshop (119 Main Street) and is sponsored by The Ludlow Health Center. The pig, created by Nancy Sears and affectionately named “Tickled Pink” can be viewed at her sponsor, Mary W. Davis and Company, located in the Ludlow Shopping Center. "Fabrico de Rooster", the French Country Provincial rooster painted by Denise Turco will display at Chrisandra’s (122 Main Street) and is sponsored by Ted Stryhas Builders. The sheep sponsored by Hunter Lea Gallery and Frameshop, “Ewe 2”, decorated by Leslie Stuart will be raffled off at the Hoedown and can be viewed at the Wine and Cheese Depot (46 Depot Street) where raffle tickets are available. The Cria and farm animals will be auctioned at the Hoedown during the live auction starting at 7:30 pm in the Round House at Jackson Gore. Along with these beautiful animals, twelve beautifully hand painted antique sap buckets will be auctioned on behalf of the Black River Academy Museum’s Elevator fundraising effort. These sap buckets are also on display throughout the Village of Ludlow and all can be viewed online at www.LudlowStreetscapes.com. All auction items can be previewed at 5:30 PM when the evening event begins.
Additionally, the Hoedown will feature a silent auction of "Unique Vermont Experiences", with exciting experiences such as a day of fun and adventure at Hawk Mountain, Bike tours, Catered Clambake for 10 and many more. More exclusive experiences will be auctioned live, such as a day hunt with Tim Mueller, President and owner of Okemo Mountain Resort, at the all exclusive Corbin Park, a 18-hole round of golf and lunch with Jim Remy, VP PGA of America and GM, VP of Okemo Valley Golf Course.

BRGNS - FROM SINKS TO MINKS RUMMAGE SALE Ludlow's Largest Sale ever Black River Good Neighbors Rummage Sale at Fletcher Farm September 28th & 29th 10AM to 4PM
Black River Good Neighbor Services is planning one of the largest Rummage Sales ever held in Ludlow. The sales, which is a two day event, is scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday, September 28th & 29th from 10AM to 4PM.
Audrey Bridge the Manager of the BRGNS Thrift Shop said “The Rummage Sales is going to be so big that it’s too large for our shop to hold. Fortunately, Fletcher Farm has generously donated the use of their barn for this special event.” Ms. Bridge also said that “if the community comes out to support the Rummage Sale, we’d like to make it an annual event.”
If you have items that you would like to donate for the Rummage Sale, please call Audrey at 802-228-3663 for information on when and where to drop items off. Computers, computer parts, TV, typewriters or word processors will not be sold at this event. Furniture in good condition is acceptable if dropped off at the sales site, not at the Thrift Shop location.
Audrey concluded by saying “volunteers will be needed all during the week of September 24th to help move merchandise from the Thrift Shop to Fletcher Farm, so if you have some time and a car or truck and can give a few hours of your time please let us know.”

Fletcher Farm
August Activities There is a lot going on at Fletcher Farm School for the Arts and Crafts in Ludlow Vermont throughout the month of August. Come and join some of the country’s best instructors in a class or two. Ushering the month in will be a Quilting Medallion given by Mary Ryan on July 30, 31, August 1, 2, & 3. Also on these dates a Course on Intermediate Block Weaving will be available with Susan Rockwell as the instructor and Barbara Klumb will be teaching an Open Workshop on Stained Glass. “The Oxford Fine Work Punch Needle” method will be available through instructor Amy Oxford on July 31, August 1, 2, & 3 as well as a class on Full Color Plein Air Oil Painting with Charlie Hunter on these same dates. Mary Avery will instruct an Early American Decoration Open Workshop on July 31 through August 5. On August 1, 2, & 3. A class on Carving Woodspirit Walking Sticks is planned for August 3, 4, & 5 with Don Heuerman as the teacher. Sande Synder will engage participants in creating a hanging flag door sign on the 4th. August 4, & 5 will offer courses in Fiber & Color, Marbled Fabric, PMC (Precious Metal Clay) , Painting with Fabrics and a class on making a Peyote Amulet Purse with Patty Manning, a master Native American Beader. August 6 through the 10th offers classes in Rosemaling with instructor Eldrid Skjold Arntzen; a course in Quilting where participants can get guidance and advice on just about all aspects of quilting with Amy Oxford is also available. Beginning Weaving with Diane Yelton and China Painting will be instructed by Inez Gornall as well as classes in Theorem Painting and Scandinavian Style Wood Carving are all being offered on these dates.
